The foregoing, which we have signed collectively although there are fourseparate authors with four different styles, are intended as a joint statementof the importance and greatness of the conciliar Constitution Dei Verbum. Webelieve that the four aspects that we have presented in this study demonstrateits novelty and character, while illustrating amply its unique contribution. The Dei Verbum possesses a great theological richness. Its text is a work offine intricacy which needs to be read with care, taking account of its manydetails – some of them of clear importance – which accompanied its long andlaborious writing. We applaud this great conciliar Constitution, which is trulyinnovative and which still has a fundamental validity. Our wish is that theDei Verbum continues to serve to make the Word of God indeed ‘like the soul’of the theological reflection of the Church (DV 24). |
