Ever increasing and more complex requirements are being put on the properties of materials. Moreover, materials must often simultaneously possess a variety of properties and in some cases these can be seemingly opposing properties, such as hardness and elasticity. Besides general properties such as the mechanical characteristics and the resistance to chemicals and temperature, the surface properties also determine the value and uses of a product. This is particularly true for elastomers, whose surface properties are difficult to alter in a permanent way without changing the volume characteristics. Plasma technology, however, provides a variety of tools for accomplishing this. For example, surface activation can be used to improve the adhesion properties of elastomers. The surfaces of elastomers can also be provided with functional plasma-polymer coatings. This does not only reduce the tack (e. g. for O-rings) but also coatings such as non-stick coatings and layers to re duce friction and wear can be applied. |
