Popis: The article reports on investigations carried out by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI), the Association Internationale des Interpretes de Conference (AIIC) and Philips Kommunikations Industrie AG (PKI) into the possibility of using the present ISDN system as means for replacing the current system whereby professional interpreters travel to and assist personally at conferences wherever they are held, by a new system in which interpreters would operate in their home bases through audio-visual telecommunications. It discusses the work of the conference interpreter and the requirements for adequate performance, and describes an evaluation study of the ISDN technology carried out with the help of five interpreters. The conclusion of the study was that the present quality of the ISDN transmissions is inadequate for this purpose, resulting in increased fatigue and dissatisfaction with performance. Better coding algorithms and higher time-resolution of the images would be needed.
