As part of its wood research activities, the Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut (WKI) in Braunschweig, Germany, has investigated and developed a variety of approaches - radiation, vibration and ultrasound - for the nondestructive testing of particle board. Methods of radiometric density measurement will be familiar to many readers already. Interesting options exist, however, in the form of vibration-based processes for determining the modulus of elasticity, and the use of ultrasound to obtain more and better information online about middle layer properties, e.g. internal bond. |
