Popis: | Streptococcus suis is a bacterial disease that affects post-weaning piglets. Current treatment and prevention methods are limited; however, an improved understanding of the epidemiology of the pathogen may help guide disease control efforts. Estimates of a key epidemiological parameter (R0) were identified using three different analytic approaches. The R0 estimates generated were subsequently used to parameterize a stochastic compartmental model to explore the impact of host demographics on the patterns of disease incidence in the nursery. The model was used to examine the potential impact of management practices that modify the timing of entry of susceptible hosts into the population as a means of disease control. Findings from this research highlight the transmission potential of this disease and the endemic nature of the pathogen which continues to hamper disease control efforts. The results suggest that increasing the interval between piglet cohorts may be effective in reducing overall S. suis incidence in the nursery. |
