Popis: This report presents a brief overview of eutrophication - related algal biomass increases in the Great Lakes and their relationship to such water quality problems as: taste and odour and clogging of filters at water treatment plants, oxygen depletion, alteration of aquatic habitat, aesthetic impairment and toxicity. The majority of the report deals with a review of methods available for the assessment of algal biomass and productivity, and, for illustration, relates methods employed by the MOE Great Lakes Surveys Unit in the nearshore of Lake Ontario. The application of data gathered by these methods in the categorization of lake trophic status is also briefly discussed. Prepared for Working Group II of the Water Management Steering Committee
