E-learning is becoming increasingly popular in post-secondary education. However, the engagement levels in an online learning environment remain lower that those in a traditional classroom. This study explores an approach to im- proving engagement levels in e-learning without the need for extensive student modelling. A Moodle plug-in was created to introduce the aspects of peer competition, comparison, and self progress monitoring. Log data was used to examine any changes in engagement due to the addition of the plug-in. Statis- tical analysis was inconclusive as to whether or not engagement was improved. However, feedback from the participants was positive and clustering of the data revealed trends that could be incorporated into future iterations of the experi- ment. The researcher feels that a repeat of either this, or a similar experiment carried out in an experimental environment rather than a classroom may yield better quantitative evaluations. |
