Popis: Numerous problems with conventional lawns have been documented and agreed upon. However, in spite of this knowledge, recent research shows that few people are readily adopting lawn alternatives. This research set out to determine: what type of landscape is replacing the lawn, why people decide to eliminate their lawn, and the type of people who choose to do this. Lawn alternatives were defined as landscapes dominated by materials other than traditional turf grass. This study found that most homeowners used typical ornamental plants and few were recreating native plant communities. Aesthetic improvement was the most common reason to eliminate a lawn, followed by an enjoyment of gardening, low maintenance, and reduction in chemical use. The type of people who choose to eliminate their lawn could not be significantly determined. However, preliminary data suggests that these people are younger, highly educated, single and concerned about local environmental issues.
