Tuff gives the Una River its distinct type of flow, unique in the world. In the clear blue water of the Una River, tuff has formed many dams with overflows and waterfalls. Its universality and uniqueness was recognized by a Roman legionary who was so overwhelmed when he reached the river that he said Una, meaning one and only in Latin. Tuff waterfalls on the Una were a decisive and indicatory factor in the 2008 assignation of the upper basin of the Una as a national park of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This article discusses the genesis and evolution of tuff cascades occurring in physicalgeographic conditions determined by specific elements, the most important of which are the carbonate geological base, water temperature, pH value, water clarity, presence of tuff forming plants in the river water, etc.. Because of that, all physical-geographic conditions in the Una basin must have a strict natural development regime with strict protection measures for the individual elements and the total complex. |
