Popis: Neonatal mortality represents a relevant problem in dogs during the first three weeks of life. The risk of mortality during the first two days of life is particularly high, with most neonatal losses occur-ring within this period. Both infectious and non-infectious diseases, such as dystocia, trauma and con-genital malformations, can cause neonatal mortality. Among all the conditions that can lead to death in newborns, hypoxia, hypothermia and hypoglycemia are mostly observed. An accurate neonatal clinical examination allows to identify at-risk newborns and to provide them with adequate treatment. Apgar score, birth weight, body temperature and glycemia are useful parameters for the assessment of at-risk newborns. Finally, prevention is a key point to limit neonatal diseases and mortality. Prevention is carried out through meticulous breeding and environmental management.
