Popis: In line with several theories on status attainment, there is growing empirical support for the notion that stereotypically feminine gay men are still disadvantaged compared with gay men who present in a more traditionally masculine way. Further, theories suggest that gay men may themselves be complicit in such discrimination. It is the aim of this thesis, therefore, to investigate whether gay men prefer to confer status to masculine over feminine gay men, and if so, what may underlie this effect. In total, 128 gay and 128 straight men from around Australia were asked to assist with the casting of a gay man in an ad campaign for tourism in Sydney. Participants were randomly presented with six ‘candidates’ - actors who acted a script in a masculine or feminine manner. Across the different videos, participants showed a significant preference for the masculine portrayals. For straight men, masculine preference was predicted by higher homonegativity. Whereas internalised homophobia did not predict masculine preference among gay men, modern sexism (towards women) did. The theoretical rationale for these effects, their implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
