Popis: This thesis examines the interaction between private foundations and media in Denmark. According to Statistics Denmark Danish media received 5 mio kroner from foundations in 2016. In 2018 the amount climbed to 17 mio kroner.Through a survey this thesis finds that in Denmark at least four media have accepted donations from foundations: Altinget, Danwatch, Folkeskolen and Dagbladet Information.Through interviews with different kinds of news professionals this thesis examines in a field perspective how the interaction between foundations and the media affects the journalists self-perceived autonomy. Concerns about how foundations affect the autonomy of journalists have been raised In the international literature (Brown 2010; Bunce 2016; Schriffin 2017) This study finds that donations from foundations may be associated with a better possibility for journalists to obey the logics of journalism. The reason is that support from foundations gives the journalists time and possibility to produce without the pressure of commercial interests. But support from foundations is often earmarked and restricts journalistic autonomy, because it delimits the stories that the journalists are able to produce. This thesis draws upon the English and American literature concerning the relationship between foundations and the media. Three findings from the international literature are also seen in the Danish media-world: Foundations sometimes interfere with editorial decisions; support from foundations can lead to non-editorial tasks; and foundations emphasize impact. Foundation supported journalism is on the rise in the US. In Denmark the interaction between media and foundations is still relatively limited. Hallin and Mancini’s media systems theory suggests that Denmark and the US differ in several ways. In this thesis the role of the state is highlighted as a possible factor to explain why the relation between foundations and the media-sector is different in Denmark than in the US. Primarily because the Danish state supports all kinds of media. This means that it is easier for the media in Denmark to stay economically independent of private interests.Time will tell how this relation will develop in a future of diminished income from adds in the media.
