The main research question of this thesis is: “By which dominant discourses are truth value claimed in an electoral campaign prior to a Danish EC/EU referendum and how is this ‘a collective activity of thinking’?” To answer the research question, a Governmentality analysis of the Danish EC/EU referenda from 1972-2015 is conducted based on the theoretical framework of Michel Foucault, Nikolas Rose & Peter Miller and Mitchell Dean. Furthermore, four qualitative interviews with politicians and experts have been produced to strengthen the analysis of the Danish referendum on Justice and Home Affairs December 3 2015 due to the topicality of the referendum. The thesis concludes that roughly two patterns have occurred in the electoral campaigns prior to the Danish EC/EU referenda. Whereas, the actors advocating for a ‘yes’ have used pragmatic arguments, the actors agitating a ‘no’ have had a strong emphasis on the implications from the loss of Danish sovereignty and Danishness historically. |
