The objective of this thesis is to achieve knowledge of how newly qualified nurses experience their first encounter with working life as well as the significance of interaction with other health staffs for participation in a community of practice. The following research question was investigated: How do newly qualified nurses find that nursing school prepared them for working life and how do conditions in working life influence their participation in a community of practice? The study takes a philosophical-hermeneutic theoretical approach and the empirical material is based on 4 semi-structured interviews – 1 focus group interview, 1 double interview and 2 individual interviews. The interviews focused on the participants’ expectations and experiences of being a nurse as well as how they experienced the interaction with other health staffs. The study indicates that newly qualified nurses find their first encounter with working life challenging. They find it difficult to make use of the knowledge they obtained during their education, which may result in them experiencing ‘Reality Shock’. Also they experience their participation in a community of practice to be limited. The study concludes that newly qualified nurses do not find that nursing school prepares them sufficiently for working life. Furthermore, newly qualified nurses find it difficult to interact with other health staffs, which consequently limits their participation in the community of practice. |
