This thesis investigates the extent to which the neighborhood Grønttorvet's physical-material and socio-spatial organization enables the potential for vitality in the area. It does so by drawing on performative and sensory methods which use urban theories and situated knowledge through interpretive autoethnography in combination with situated ethnographic data-collection. Using Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notions of the smooth and striated space, negotiations which take place at the crossroads between the two are identified, in order to evaluate the capacity for change as one of the necessary conditions for vitality. Additionally, using Jane Jacobs’ critique of modern city planning as well as her four essential conditions for city diversity, the potential for diversity as another precondition for vitality, is investigated. The thesis finds that the physical-material and socio-spatial organization in Grønttorvet is characterized by an overall feeling of homogeneity which is reinforced mainly through a process of striation of the space. Although possibilities for affecting and changing the physical-material and socio-spatial conditions in the area exist, the general conditions for diversity in the area are compromised, which might influence the neighborhood's capability to absorb new input and withstand future challenges. Future research should focus on supplementing the current study with data-collection from additional human and non-human sources, in order to truly encompass the complexity of the dynamics between humans, materialities and relations. The thesis comes to fruition with suggestions and perspectives for making cities with capacity for changing as the world changes around and in it. |
