Las ausencias de Mariano Picón Salas del país resultan una migración forzada, cuando sale para Chile, veinteañero, huyendo de la ruina familiar y del gomecismo; cuando escapa de la inestabilidad política y la ingratitud de los cuarenta. Pero cuando regresa está dispuesto a construir, a ejecutar proyectos concebidos en la lejanía y tras su formación, insistirá hasta el final, modelador y prospectista, pero las instituciones y los estilos de la democracia no parecen estar a la altura de su devoción. Aquí damos una mirada a esos momentos de gestión y remodelación, en medio de la evolución de una vida civil venezolana todavía tocada por los personalismos y el equívoco debate de la justicia social. Being away from his country was, in the case of Mariano Picón Salas, a forced process of migration, that lead him to Chile. He was still in his twenties and was escaping from the family’s economic ruin and the Gómez dictatorship. Late on, was also forced to leave in the context of the political instability and ingratitude of the 1940s. But when he returns, he is ready to develop, to execute projects conceived in the distance and after his academic formation. He insisted until the end of his life, with his modeling and prospective vision, but the institutions and styles of democracy did not correspond to his aspirations.
