The renovation of a historic building within the city is often regarded as a catalyst to the economic development of cities. However, the social impacts are usually deprioritised or even disregarded. In this research, I am trying to bring together several social assessment approaches applied to cultural or heritage-led regeneration projects of core districts to formulate a sustainability assessment tool that focuses on the social aspects of these projects. We apply such criteria on the rehabilitation project of the historical Souq Waqif in Doha, Qatar. The results highlight not only the ups and downs of the project, but also the contrasts between the planner’s evaluation of the social impacts of the project and the social values perceived and expected by eventual place users, whether they are residents, workers, or tourists. |
