Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi being able to infect a host organism. Despite decades of substantial progress in their prevention and treatment, infectious diseases remain a significant burden on global economies and public health. They constitute a major cause of illness and death, being responsible for worsening the living conditions of many millions of people around the world. Furthermore, due to the clinical use of the chemotherapy, microbes have developed the ability to elude the action of the antimicrobials with numerous survival strategies to counterattack the drugs. In fact, nowadays, one of the main challenges for the infectious chemotherapy is the upcoming of resistances that occurs at an alarming rate among all classes of mammalian pathogens.
