Robots reinforce stereotypes, augment biases, and become renewed forms of marginalization. The HRI field is uncovering how the robots may be discriminatory, but it needs methods to realize diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and justice in practice. Moreover, HRI must explore research paradigms and techniques to include diverse humans in the robots' development process and consider power structures and intersections of socio-technical oppressions in participatory practices. To tackle these methodological gaps, we present four tools to practice reflexivity and futuring in the early stages of human-robot interaction (HRI) projects with HRI researchers, marginalizing communities, and various stakeholders. The tools focus on (i) how bias plays out in data classification, (ii) implicit assumptions in HRI, (iii) mapping privileges, (iv) challenging the status quo of HRI, and (v) imagining desirable futures. The tools lay the groundwork for inclusive HRI and changing current practices in an open societal conversation. |
