In the Dutch education system, two indicators are used to place students in a fitting track in secondary education: a track recommendation by the primary school and a track recommendation based on a standardized attainment test. The school provides the student with an initial track recommendation; subsequently the standardized test is made. The initial track recommendation can be adjusted to a higher final track recommendation when the track recommendation based on the standardized test is higher. This study investigates to what extent the initial track recommendation, in comparison to the final track recommendation and the track recommendation based on the standardized test, predicts educational attainment after three years of secondary education, for three recent cohorts with population data. For all educational levels and cohorts, it holds that the initial and final track recommendations are better predictors of the educational attainment after three years of secondary education than the standardized test. |
