The sense of authenticity is defined as the sense of being true to oneself. This paper reviews research on the sense of authenticity in adolescence from the perspectives of self-esteem, ego-identity, and sense of ibasho. There have been a number of studies on the sense of authenticity and self-esteem, but there is little research on the sense of authenticity and ego-identity. In studies of the sense of authenticity and sense of ibasho, items proximate to the sense of authenticity are treated as factors of the sense of ibasho. I suggest that the sense of authenticity—true self-esteem—ought to be characterized as a trait, associated with certain personality elements. Although self-esteem, ego-identity, and sense of ibasho are related, I believe that the sense of authenticity is a distinct concept. I will consider using relevant projective techniques with additional psychological characteristics. Qualitative research should be undertaken in this area. |
