Background : In current society, child-rearing is challenging practice as there are an increasing number of nuclear families in which imitative learning of child-rearing knowledge and skills is difficult. Objective : By observing mothers' participation in the exchange meeting, we aim to explicate transition in mothers' behavior and discover elements what can be useful for child rearing support. Method : We analyzed data from Pre-Assessment of Child Abuse Prevention (PACAP) research targeted on 550 mothers who rear infants on A Island. We abstracted 3 relevant groups for this analysis - those who seek for consultation, who illustrate abuse risks, and who show normal responses - and examined development stages among mothers who belonged to one of these groups and who participated in "Child-Rearing Exchange Meeting." The meetings were held 3 times weekly, and 10 mothers were enrolled. We analyzed their statement with reference to Modified Grounded Theory Approach (M-GTA). Result :At the stage of "feeling child rearing," mothers felt "difficulty" and tried to find ways to "overcome it with own ideas." It was the stage that they felt "it was difficult to let their children sleep earlier" in accordance with national health promotion. At the stage of "seeking for support," they looked for baby sitting service as well as "refreshment" time too maintain sound mental state. Moreover, mothers seek for "concrete child rearing methods" and "child rearing information" with which they can better their child rearing. By "involving husbands" in domestic work including child rearing, they tried to mitigate mental burden. Mothers "looked back" their child rearing by observing their husbands' child rearing methods. At the final stage, through their "interests in children," child rearing becomes part of their life. Then, they deepen "relationship with other motors" and become interested in "building child rearing environment." Conclusion : In the first session, mothers reviewed their child-rearing. In the second session, they sought for support involving their husbands. In the last session they realized that it is necessary to arrange their child-rearing environment. |
