Popis: An X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, XRS, has been developed for the SELENE mission, a Japanese lunar polar orbiter that awaits its launch in 2006. The XRS will map major elemental composition of lunar surface with less than 20 km in spatial resolution and 90 percent surface coverage except for polar region. The lunar surface composition maps those obtained by the XRS and other instruments such as gamma-ray and near-infrared spectroscopy will play important roles for investigating the evolution processes of lunar crust, late stage igneous processes, and understanding the lunar inner structure in more detail. The XRS has been designed to improve energy resolution and detection efficiency at soft x-rays by adopting new technologies such as X-ray CCD and ultra-thin beryllium window. The current status of the instrumental development is also described.
