The purpose of this paper is to describe the current situation and challenges concerning support for victims of sexual assault and violence in Japan. The main focus is on the establishment of 37 ‘One-Stop Support Centers’ since 2010. These centers’ future aim is to provide urgent support for victims 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This study is informed by the United Nations’ ‘Eradicating Act of Violence Against Women’, and domestically by both the Basic Law for Gender Equal Society and the Basic Law for Crime Victims. From white papers on crime, the International Crime Victims Survey (ICVS,2012), and an investigation of violence against woman(Gender Equality Bureau Cabinet office,2015), we can see the severe situation victims face and the need for psychological and mental care to facilitate both resilience and recovery. Finally, this article concluded that the ‘One-Stop Support Center’ for victims of sexual assault and violence is necessary to raise awareness and provide psychoeducation for young women, and to construct the support system for male victims. The One-Stop Center is expected to be a comprehensive, multidirectional and multi-layered system. |
