In the research project on old customs and systems conducted by theJapanese Government-General of Korea, four research materials concerningthe family system in Korea were published in the 1930s. Here I analyze thethree most important materials. In colonial Korea, instead of Japanese family law, Korean common law wasapplied as family law. Accordingly, the Japanese Government-General ofKorea pursued its family system policy in conjunction with a legislative projectaimed at amending the family law. This study reveals the impact of the threeresearch materials on the amendment of the family law. Specifically, they proposedthat the common law applied as family law in Korea should be reformedinto family law typical of Japan as stipulated in the Civil Law of Japan. |
