Luo Zhenyu (1866-1940), a famous stone calligrapher and collector, began to interact with the Japanese while he was in his early thirties. In 1898, Luo Zhenyu and Fujita Toyohachi (1869-1929) founded the Dongwen Xueshe (東文学社) in Shanghai, teaching Japanese language and modern science. In 1901 and 1909 Zhang Zhidong ordered him to visit Japan, after which he left written records of his stay. The Xinhai (辛亥) Revolution broke out in October 1911 Qing China, Luo was reluctant to join the new government of the Republic of China, so he took his family to reside in Kyoto. Luo Zhenyu had correspondence with the stela calligrapher Yamamoto Kyôzan (1863-1934) before and during Luo's residence in Kyoto. They kept a written conversation. The content included exchanges on information about calligraphy and t purchase of calligraphy, as well as comments on daily life, all of which have been well preserved. This paper uses the letters and other documents of Yamamoto to discuss various aspects of Luo from Kyozan's perspective. |
