WHO definition of health is that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In WHO definition of health, the interpretation of the phrase, complete physical, mental and social well-being is rather controversial. The complete well-being tends to mean that the quality of well-being must be perfect. Thus if any kinds of abnormal findings are observed in our physical, mental and social condition, it urges us to think that we are not healthy any more. Nowadays, it is thought that the WHO definition of health may be too idealistic and not the practical aim for our health promotion. It is proposed in this paper that the word, complete should not be interpreted as perfect but as having all that is needed for the integrity of well-being. It is therefore reasoned that the phrase, complete physical, mental and social well-being should be interpreted as well-being which comprises all three aspects; physical, mental and social well-being. |
