| Popis: | 学術論文 Ito Tozan I (1946-1920) is one of five ceramic artists who were designated to the Imperial Household artist and is considered as one of the leading figures in the history of modern ceramics in Japan. Despite his importance in the history of Kyoto ceramic ware, the life and works of Tozan have not properly been studied. This research thus began gathering records and previous scholarly works on this ceramic artist. Then, it focuses on his decoration with the Medal with Green Ribbon and an appointment to the Imperial Household Artist. In 1880s onward, Tozan participated in projects to improve and promote the Kyoto ceramic industry such as integrating ceramic workers’ unions and establishing ceramic research institute, which provided workers accesses to the latest technologies and products. Hence, his recognition by the government was a result of his contributions to improvement of the ceramic industry in Kyoto. |
