In the study, twelve student teachers in a practice teaching program were asked to formulate metaphors on 3 components of a community Japanese language program: the teacher, the learner, and the classroom. The student teachers were given this task at 3 different stages of their program: at the early and late phases of the preparation period, and after completion of the program. An analysis of the student teachers' use of metaphor provided the following results: (1) Student teachers recognized the teacher's role in a community Japanese language program as a more extended one than that in a normative Japanese language program. (2) The student teachers regarded a community Japanese language program as the environment in which to share the idea of harmonious coexistence with the community. (3) The student teachers' view of students as passive learners changed into one in which the students took a more active role in their learning. (4) The stud\ ent teachers' view of learners as being community oriented changed into one in which learners were classroom or teacher oriented. |
