Onsite surveys of preschool group education facilities were conducted in the kingdom of Bhutan, a country with a high level of subjective happiness. Three private preschool facilities participated in these surveys. The principals and teachers at the facilities agreed to be interviewed. The three facilities had the following in common: there was a fee for attendance; the facilities had their own buses; services were available for children aged three and up; lessons included practicing reading and writing; instruction was in English; children were required to bring their own lunches and water bottles; and there were two different time schedules available. The effort put into teaching reading and writing was very different from preschool in Japan. Observations found that all students held their pencils correctly. This is likely due to thorough one-on-one instruction provided by the teachers. In the oldest class, the way the students sat at individual desks and learned reading and writing was similar to elementary school education in Japan. This is probably related to the fact that one year of education prior to starting elementary school is required in Bhutan. In addition, the availability of two different class schedules at these facilities is similar to the current system of certified centers for early childhood education and care in Japan. Future research on this topic could contribute to early childhood education in Japan. |
