This paper explores the conditional/concessive imperatives in Japanese to refute the claim that they present counterevidence to Traugott's model of semantic change, and to propose a construction grammar account of their development. Since the constructions consist of an imperative clause and another clause, functioning as a protasis and an apodosis, previous studies have focused on how the conditional meaning derives from the directive. However, given that a construction is a conventionalized pair of form and meaning, semantics alone cannot capture the whole story. This paper identifies the possible onset of the constructionalization, where the sequence is routinized and chunked together. 龍城正明先生 秋篠憲一先生 中井悟先生 斉藤延喜先生 御退職記念号 Specially dedicated to Professor Masaaki Tatsuki, Professor Ken'ichi Akishino, Professor Satoru Nakai, and Professor Nobuyoshi Saito on their retirement 論文(Article) |
