This project develops interactive retrieval system for English and Japanese texts, with a focus on language structures and historically descriptive methods. Furthermore, it promotes international collaboration by making these interactive retrieval system available to the public through the Internet, and by giving assistance to historical research. The literature we are dealing with is as follows: 1) Japanese ancient chronologies such as Kojiki, Nihon Shoki, and Shoku Nihongi, and Jinno Shotoki, 2)Engishiki, a collection of laws and regulations on shrines, 3) Izumo Fudoki, a local document of a certain area, and 4) Gukansho, a seven-volume representative history text of the Middle Ages, and so on. Moreover, we intend to digitize the twenty-five volumes of Japanese classic texts. The goals of the development of this system and this research are two-fold: 1) to contribute to the research of Japanese history and literature conducted by English-speaking researchers and students, and 2) to pursue the synergistic effect of research by promoting collaboration between English-speaking researchers and Japanese researchers. Such collaboration can be significant for researchers on Japanese history in both English-speaking countries and Japan. The areas of the collaborative research range from Japanese ancient history and research on the history and foundation of the ancient Japanese state to ethnological research. We expect our project to pioneer the retrieval of and access to historical information from Japan. With these goals, we constructed 1) a search program within texts using English and/or Japanese, 2) a search program connecting different texts, and 3) a browsing function. We also created 4) an English translation-assisting program on the Internet which makes the best use of the characteristics of Shoku Nihongi as a chronicle, the years, seasons, months, and dates are automatically displayed on the screen. We, furthermore, plan to connect the current system to geographic and historical information that is important in dealing with the information on literature and ancient historical materials. |
