Acceptance of Taro Okamoto’s Public Art Works by Local Residents -A Case Study of Work 'Kaen' in Arita-cho, Saga Prefecture-

Popis: Taro Okamoto(1911~1996) was an artist who made more than 140 public arts from 1952 to 1996, which varied in a wide range of different media. Research and consideration on his public arts are essential to understand his art work especially in his later life. For he worked in various kinds of activities specifically as a writer, a cast on TV and a speaker, it is necessary to grasp whether his activities were generally accepted for evaluating his art work.His posthumous work “Kaen” owned by Forest Park of the History and the Culture is one of his public art. The purpose of this paper is to clarify whether the work “Kaen” was accepted by local residents. Section 1 confirms history and the definition of “public art”. Section 2 surveys previous researches on public art by Taro Okamoto, and clarifies their themes. Section 3 explores the background of setting up of “Kaen” and process of its production. By conducting provided questionnaires to local residents, a conclusion was lead on whether or not “Kaen” was accepted by local residents.
