The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how participatory fi eldwork at kindergartens and day-care centers from 2009 was eff ective in cultivating superior professional abilities in fi rst year students studying to become kindergarten teachers or child care workers. The participating students were divided into groups each consisting of four or five students, and participated in fieldwork from 9:00am to 11:30am at a kindergarten and a day-care center for three months starting late April every year. Their fi eldwork was conducted periodically and continuously three times at the same kindergarten and also three times at the same day-care center during one semester. In the school year 2011, the third year of this research, a new approach was attempted. At the beginning of the semester professors introduced various methods of observation to the students which was then followed by fi eldwork, in which the students observed young children’s lives and behavior in kindergarten and day-care centers. This method was eff ective in that students improved their observation skills, and the recording of the environment and behavior of young children, kindergarten teachers, and childcare workers. In conclusion, the eff ectiveness of teaching a class that requires participatory fi eldwork at kindergartens and day-care centers during fi rst year education not only aff ords students a better understanding young children, kindergarten teachers, child care workers and the environmental component, but it also enriched teacher-training education in association with related classes.
