This paper focuses on the development family policy and gender equality policy in Switzerland. Comparisons of Switzerland's family policy relative to international standards result in foot-dragging impressions. The implementation of a federal program to subsidize the childcare infrastructure was enacted in 2003, the introduction of compulsory maternity insurance was enacted in 2005, while nationwide harmonization and family allowance was finally implemented in 2006. Thus, the implementation of its policies did not occur until the 21st century. This article traces the development of family policies in Switzerland. The result shows that childcare services and nurseries available under the family policies are insufficient, and childcare costs are very high. The gender roles are still strong throughout this society, and therefore, the responsibility of childcare is on mothers' shoulders, requiring them to work as part-timers. In spite of this, they are employed equally, and gender equality has progressed in the labor market. |
