Popis: The article intends to offer reading materials with some exercises and show how to read paragraphs in English effectively so that both college students and teachers can have new perspectives on how to improve the abilities of students to read and write English on a pre-intermediate level. This is the fourth installment of the series with the same title. This article expounds a type of question that requires an explanatory answer in written Japanese, which is frequently given at my term-end examinations at UEC. I never fail to make a few questions of the type for each exam so that a high level of reading ability of examinees can be evaluated. Some of our students are not good at answering this kind of question mainly because they find it difficult to grasp the context of an English passage and its logical development. Part 2 of the article deals with what I call ‘explanatory questions,’ while Part 1 treats the advantage of studying English by the use of Japanese and Part 3 introduces 『本物の英語力』 by鳥飼玖美子, which asserts the essentials for studying English. The English passages in this paper are taken from the National Center University Entrance Examination for English in 2015. That is because it can be a suitable tool for enhancing the reading and writing abilities of college students if they use its texts only and examine closely how the reading passages are composed and expressed.
