The instability and irregularity of multi-dimensional detonations, experimentally observed for a long time, are studied numerically. By increasing computational resolution significantly the computed results are able to reproduce most of the salient experimental features like inherent instability of a plane ZND detonation, irregular triple-shock structures seen in self-sustaining detonations and very fine triple-shock structures superimposed in a macroscopic triple-shock configuration. Different-strength perturbations are also applied to (i) a ChapmanJouguet and (ii) well-developed multi-dimensional detonations, using different grid resolutions; confirming decoupling of the former and self-sustenance of the latter. Although the effect of resolution on the essential features of a detonation is observed, there seems to be a critical resolution above which most of the experimentally-observed important phenomena are maintained in the numerical simulation. |
