Popis: A deflection-type automatic recording thermobalance using a metal spring and a differential transformer is described. With this device, recorded output is assured to be a linear function of change in weight of the sample and the accuracy of measurement, checked by dehydration of cupric sulfate pentahydrate and oxalic acid dihydrate, was found to be within several per cent of the original sample. The device could be readily used for a full scale of 10 mg. weight changes by using more sensitive tungsten spring and for a full scale of about 100 mg. by using less sensitive phosphor-bronze spring. Using this apparatus thermogravimetric analysis of a high density polyethylene is carried out in the presence of air and in nitrogen atmosphere at a constant heating rate of about 1℃./min. In the presence of air the oxidative degradation takes place in two stages; the first stage occurs over the temperature range from ca. 340 to 370℃., and the second stage from ca. 370 to 450℃. But in nitrogen atmosphere thermal degradation of polyethylene was occured in one stage over the range from ca. 350 to 450℃.
