This study examines changes in attitude to disabilities and considers current issues on the subject. Views on disabilities can be understood from within a social model rather than a personal model by using the concept of normalization, or as new independence-based on the work of the independent living movement. Emphasis on empowerment and viewing the state of health, rather than disabilities, are common today, as is the point of view of disability as personality. It is proposed that it is necessary to establish a view of disabilities that acknowledges the disability, while building a society where the disabled are not disadvantaged. |
