Sustainability of the Effect of Explicit Grammar Instruction: Focus on the Acquisition of English Verbs by Japanese Learners

Popis: | Regardless of their proficiency and first language, second language learners tend to permit and/or make verb-related errors such as overpassivisation, or object drop in transitive sentence structures (Hirakawa 1995, Zobl 1989). In our previous study (Kumagami & Okuda 2022), we investigated whether explicit grammar instruction affects JLEs’ (Japanese learners of English) use of intransitive and transitive verbs. Our study showed a significant increase of test scores after the instruction was given. However, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of this instruction, it is necessary to verify whether this effect persist over time through follow-up studies. Thus, the present study investigates the long-term effect of explicit grammar instruction. We conducted 2 delayed tests, using the same method as was applied in the previous study. Our research shows, a long-term effect even after the second delayed test (31 weeks after the instruction). Although only a limited number of participants took the second test, the results of this study indicate that the effects of explicit grammar instruction are longlasting. 長崎大学言語教育研究センター論集, 11, pp.1-12; 2023 |
