A plasma concentration of PIVKA-II was measured in 19 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 44 with liver cirrhosis, 16 with chronic hepatitis, 11 with other benign liver diseases and 10 with other extrahepatic carcinoma. An abnormal high value of PIVKA-II was seen in 73.7% of the patients with HCC, and 40% of the patients with extrahepatic carcinoma. On the other hand, only 4.5% of patients with liver cirrhosis showed an elevated valueof PIVKA-II, and none of the patientswith both chronic hepatitis and other benign liver diseaes showed an abnormal value of PIVKA-II. Sensitivity and specificity of PIVKA-II in HCC were 73.7%, and 92.6%, respectively. Finally, we suggest that PIVKA-II would be unuseful for screening test in the early detection of HCC, because of its relatively low sensitivity against HCC. However, the test would be useful for the differencial diagnosis of the patients having space-occupying lesion in the liver. |
