Popis: In Japan, barrier-free design of picture books devised to make it possible for children with disabilities to participate in the content of picture books and give them enjoyment began in the 1960s. When exactly did barrier-free picture books begin to be made in Japan and how? This study surveys the early period of barrier-free picture books and chronicles its history between 1960 and 2002. The backdrop of these activities can be found in the heightened awareness in society of the rights of people with disabilities in the run-up to the United Nations International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981. That increased awareness was clearly the result of the trial-and-error contributions of parents, families, and others involved with persons with disabilities to the development of handcrafted books through volunteer groups and private community libraries for children( bunko). Important in the area of published books are the efforts of publishers inspired by programs for published books observed overseas. The study confirmed that in the early period of barrier-free picture books earlier books directly connected to those made in the next phase.
