Findings of semi-structured interviews conducted with twelve full-time mothers of preschool children to identify factors affecting their perceptions about reemployment are reported. The interview results were analyzed by the Modified Grounded Theory Approach (M-GTA).Participants were divided into four groups:"On childcare leave,""Happily committed to childrearing.""Weak internal conflict about reemployment," and "Strong internal conflict about reemployment." The results indicated that participants went through the following process: The mothers worked before having children and considered quitting work after having children. Then, they entered a life centered on childrearing and experienced emotions of a childcare-centered lifestyle that focused on loving children and stress of childcare. The mothers finally decided to seek or not seek reemployment and considered when they would return to work. Mothers in each group faced a diversity of factors that encouraged reemployment, and that hampered reemployment, as well as external factors that governed reemployment, all of which influenced their decision-making process. A series of occurrences through which the participants experienced these processes and ultimately headed towards future prospects were identified. It also became clear that cultural factors, such as seeking rationality and achieving self-realization, influenced the participants`thoughts on whether or not to return to work. |
