The purpose of this paper is to try to improve farm management analysis from a practical viewpoint. We definedthe improvement process of farm management as follows: a manager sets up a tangible goal, extracts the substantialproblem of management, then builds a means-end chain, and gives weight depending on its importance, andreaches to the goal by reviewing the concepts of “goal", “objective", and “means" of management. From the above consideration we evaluated the “plan-do-see" cycle for farm management and pointed out that“plan" is the most important process in the cycle and farm management is performed based on a plan and evaluatedby the objective. A manager recognizes the substantial problems of management, shapes these problems into theobjective, and builds a means-end chain that is considered as a plan. Therefore, to establish an practical farm managementanalysis, information have to be offered in each stage of (“ 1) goal setting", (“ 2) extraction of substantialproblems", (“ 3) means-end chain construction", and (“ 4) weighting." Then we evaluated the previous studies from practical viewpoint as follows. Although economic analyses orbusiness-diagnosis studies on farm managment were good at extraction of substantial problems, those studies werenot good at the proposal of practical plans for problem solution. On the other hand, economic evaluation studies onfarm technology could make concrete restructuring plans, but those studies were not good at detecting substantialproblems. In this respect, many of previous studies had drawbacks somewhere in stages of( 2)-(4) nor sucessfullyoffered information to “goal setting". Finally for practical farm managemnet analyses, we proposed the measurment of farm management efficiencywith the concept of production frontier, which enables practioners to draw up a concrete plan for improvement byclarifying restriction against efficient management practice.
