Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between folate metabolizing enzyme gene polymorphism, 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphism C677T and the development of isolated non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in a Myanmar population. Patients/- Participants: We examined 156 Myanmar isolated NSCL/P patients, 96 their mothers and 64 their fathers compared to 109 controls. Results: The genotype and allele frequencies of MTHFR C677T in Myanmar isolated NSCL/P did not show statistically differences between the patient and the control group (p=0.813, 0.535) as well as the father (p=0.513, 0.267), the mother (p=0.501, 0.420) and the control group (Genotype frequency, Allele frequency). Conclusion: Our results did not suggest that MTHFR C677T polymorphism does not make a important role in the development of isolated NSCL/P in a Myanmar population. |
