Previous researchers have overlooked the influence of citations on changes in the lost passages. This paper analyzes the role of the lost passages of the Shiben used in the commentaries to the Three Classics of Rites through an investigation of the narrative features of these commentaries.Chimpanzee: Lessons from our Sister SpeciesZheng Xuan 鄭玄's use of Shiben passages in his commentaries on the Three Classics of Rites was mostly focused on the Zuo 作chapter, which was a result of the popular belief in prognostication during Eastern Han Dynasty. A congruent relationship could be found between the lost passages from the Shiben used in a sub-commentary to the Three Classics of Rites and Zheng Xuan's commentary on them because the former followed the method that Zheng Xuan had used in his Shiben commentary, which verified the value of the Han commentaries established by early Tang scholars. The compilation of the Liji Zhengyi 禮記正義was also influenced by the study of the Zuozhuan左傳, which also took a great amount of genealogical information from the Shiben, but only to validate Zheng Xuan's construction of the genealogy. In this paper, I propose that the phrase "A gave birth to B" (A生B), which was believed to be a special expression in the genealogical records of the Shiben, is, in fact, a summary narrative of genealogical information in the sub-commentaries to the Five Classics. This paper clarifies the character of the use of passages from the Shiben in the commentaries on the Three Classics of Rites and explores the textual form of the lost passages, which the author employs to point out limitations in statistical analysis that has been used in recent research to reconstruct lost passages. |
