For the constituent of a galaxy a simplified model is presumed, in which the stellar content is composed of the sequences of recently created stars and of old evolved stars: The former is subject to the initial luminosity function and the latter to the function of extreme population II stars. The number of the stars belonging to these two sequences in each galaxy is calculated from the observational data of the total masses and the intrinsic luminosities of the galaxies. Some relations between these numbers and the mass of neutral hydrogen are discussed on the basis of Schmidt's theory concerning to the star formation rate and the evolution of a galaxy. |
