Popis: Based on a uses and gratifications approach, this study investigated usage patterns and motivations of homeland media among Chinese diasporas through an interview survey of 16 Chinese IT technicians in Japan. Currently, the media environment surrounding diasporas has completely changed. Against this background, how the patterns and motivations of diasporas' homeland media usage have changed from the past, as well as the impact of media usage on them were also clarified in this article. The findings of this study demonstrate that "information gathering," "socialization" and "entertainment" are still the main patterns of diasporas' homeland media usage. However, with the rapid development of media technology and the significant growth of China's national power, there have recently been signs of diasporas' changing daily life behaviors and attitudes regarding homeland society. New usage behaviors emerged in existing usage patterns based on strategic and commercial purposes. It was also found that some of the ethnic media has already been absorbed by the homeland media and tends to merge functionally with it. Next, the interviews revealed five motivations for using homeland media: "empathy and sense of belonging" "interest in China" "attachment to the home country and native language" "desire for efficiency" and "pursuit of objectivity," among which the latter two are newly confirmed in this study. It can be assumed that the formation of motivations for "desire for efficiency" and "pursuit of objectivity" are strongly related to the rapid growth of the Chinese IT industry and the change in the internal structure of new overseas Chinese, there are more highly educated people in recent years. Results indicate that homeland media play an important role in presenting the culture and spirit of the home country, connecting Chinese diasporas and promoting the construction of a social space where social resources can be shared and Chinese culture can be inherited and reproduced. By using homeland media, diasporas have become able to realize heterogeneous coexistence with the host society, which means they can be a user or a producer of the host society's social resources, as well as a consumer or a producer of the home country's culture.
