Ogawa Sigejirou is famous as a pioneer and prophet of the modern penology in Japan, but his relationship with Chinese students is less known. According to him, he was master to altogether a few hundred Chinese students, of Qing Dynasty at the beginning of the 20th century, studying in Japan. Ogawa taught them modern penology at law schools of different natures, which has not yet attracted any academic interest. Based on both Chinese and Japanese materials, the present essay seeks to describe the friendly master-pupil relationship as well as the teaching and learning activities between Ogawa and his Chinese students. |
