In Japan, where the people aged over 65 accounts for approximately 20 percent of the population, the number of nurses who provide care to elderly people has been steadily increasing. Most nursing students today, however, haven't lived with the elderly long enough to properly understand what they are like or how to deal with them. The students tend to associate old people with images of age-related deceased strength, deterioration in daily activities, etc. Then the student nurses end up taking the elderly as the people who need to be taken care of without realizing various abilities they really have. |
